1. Start with Clean, Fresh Water

When you receive your flowers, the first thing you should do is prep their water. Flowers drink water to stay hydrated, and if the water’s not clean, they won’t last as long.

  • Use a clean vase: Make sure your vase is clean and free of any old water, dirt, or bacteria.

  • Fill with fresh water: Fill it with lukewarm or room temperature water. Cold water may shock the flowers, while hot water can cause them to wilt faster.

  • Add flower food: Most flowers come with a small packet of flower food. This will help provide nutrients and help fight off bacteria that can cause the flowers to wilt prematurely. If you don’t have any flower food, a DIY solution of a little sugar, lemon juice, and a tiny bit of bleach can also do the trick (just make sure it’s diluted).

2. Trim the Stems Regularly

Flowers drink through their stems, so trimming them properly is essential for keeping them hydrated and lasting longer. Trim about 1-2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This creates a larger surface area for the flowers to take in water.

  • Use sharp scissors or a floral knife: A clean cut is essential, as dull tools can crush the stems and limit water absorption.

  • Trim under water: To prevent air bubbles from forming in the stems (which can block water intake), trim them while submerged in water. This helps ensure maximum hydration.

3. Remove Any Leaves Below the Water Line

Any leaves or foliage submerged in the water will start to rot, which can lead to bacterial growth that will shorten the life of your flowers. Make sure to remove all leaves below the water line to keep the water fresh.

  • Check regularly: Some flowers, like roses, may drop leaves as they open, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the vase and remove any extra leaves that fall into the water.

4. Change the Water Every 2-3 Days

To prevent bacterial growth and keep the flowers hydrated, change the water every 2-3 days. Fresh water keeps the blooms nourished and extends their vase life.

  • Re-cut the stems each time you change the water, as this keeps them absorbing as much as possible.

  • Clean the vase: It’s also a good time to give the vase a quick clean to ensure no bacteria builds up.

5. Place Your Flowers in a Cool Spot

Flowers last longer when they’re not exposed to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or drafts. Keep your flowers in a cool, shady spot away from heat sources like radiators, appliances, or direct sunlight.

  • Avoid placing them near fruit: Many fruits release ethylene gas as they ripen, which can cause flowers to wilt faster. Keep your bouquet away from fruit bowls or kitchens to help them last longer.

6. Be Mindful of Room Conditions

The environment can impact your flowers’ lifespan. To keep your blooms happy:

  • Control humidity: Keep your flowers in a room with moderate humidity. Very dry air can cause them to dehydrate faster, while excessive humidity may promote mold or mildew.

  • Avoid touching the flowers unnecessarily: The oils on your hands can damage delicate petals. If you need to handle your flowers, be gentle.

7. Know the Life Expectancy of Your Blooms

Not all flowers have the same vase life. While some flowers like lilies and orchids can last up to 2 weeks with proper care, others, like tulips and daffodils, may only last 5-7 days. Knowing the typical lifespan of your flowers helps set realistic expectations.

  • Hardy flowers (e.g., chrysanthemums, sunflowers): These can often last 10-14 days.

  • Soft-stemmed flowers (e.g., poppies, peonies): These tend to last around 5-7 days.

If you’re looking for a longer-lasting bouquet, consider opting for flowers that are known for their durability.

8. Add a Touch of TLC

Fresh flowers, like any living thing, thrive when given a little extra love. If you notice any wilted or dried petals, pluck them off gently to keep the rest of the flowers looking fresh. For particularly delicate blooms, like peonies or roses, gently misting the petals with water can help restore their freshness.
