How to Keep Flowers Fresh for Longer

There’s nothing worse than bringing home a beautiful bunch of flowers, only for them to start drooping a few days later. The good news is, a few simple steps can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your flowers fresh for longer.

At Posie Club, our flowers are seasonal, thoughtfully grown, and designed to last well when cared for properly. If you’ve picked up flowers from our Mudgee studio or had a bouquet delivered to someone special, here’s how to help them stay beautiful for as long as possible.

Start With a Clean Vase

Before placing your flowers in water, make sure your vase is properly cleaned. Old bacteria sitting inside the vase are one of the quickest ways to shorten the life of fresh flowers.

A clean vase helps your flowers drink properly and keeps the water fresher for longer.

Trim the Stems

Freshly trimming the stems helps flowers absorb water more effectively. Cut roughly 1–2cm off the bottom of each stem on an angle before placing them into water.

If you can, repeat this every few days when refreshing the water.

Change the Water Regularly

One of the easiest ways to keep flowers fresh longer is simply changing the water every two to three days.

Fresh water keeps bacteria levels down and helps flowers continue drinking properly. If the water starts looking cloudy, it’s definitely time for a refresh.

Keep Flowers Out of Direct Sunlight

While flowers love natural light when growing, cut flowers tend to last longer in cooler conditions once arranged.

Avoid placing your bouquet:

  • in direct sunlight

  • near heaters

  • beside ovens

  • under strong air conditioning

A cool spot inside the home is always best.

Remove Any Dying Blooms

As flowers naturally age, removing older blooms helps the rest of the bouquet last longer. It also keeps the arrangement looking fresh and full.

Seasonal flowers change and soften over time, which is part of their beauty, but a quick tidy-up can make all the difference.

How Long Do Flowers Last in a Vase?

This depends on the flower variety, the season, and how they’re cared for.

Generally, most fresh seasonal flowers last anywhere from 5–10 days in a vase, with some varieties lasting even longer during cooler months. Winter flowers in particular often have a longer vase life thanks to the colder weather.

At Posie Club, we focus on seasonal flowers and locally grown blooms wherever possible, which helps ensure your flowers arrive fresh and last beautifully at home.

Are Your Flowers Always Locally Grown?

Almost always. We grow the majority of our flowers right here in Mudgee. During peak season, we occasionally collaborate with nearby growers in the Blue Mountains, Cassilis and Bathurst to support supply and variety.

In quieter months, or when weather impacts our crops, we may source fresh seasonal blooms from trusted Australian flower farmers to ensure consistent quality.

We always prioritise locally grown and Australian flowers wherever possible, choosing blooms based on seasonality, quality, and what’s looking best each week.
