From Scissors to Secateurs
The unexpected journey to Posie Club
Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, looking ahead and wondering if you’re heading in the right direction? That’s how I felt when I left my hairdressing salon behind. Little did I know that the path I was about to take would lead me not only to a new career but to a new chapter of my life—and a business that brings me more joy than I could have imagined.
For years, I was a hairdresser in Mudgee, running a creative space with a community of talented freelancers. I loved the art of blondes & all that came with it. I thrived on the creativity and connection that came with my work. But, deep down, I always knew floristry would be my second career.
My love for flowers & plants goes way back beyond Posie Club. I had a salon full of thriving indoor plants which I literally nurtured like a client. So I know it was no surprise to them that my next move was something involving nature.
During the 2020 lockdown, when my hair salon was forced to close, I found myself at a bit of a crossroads. With the extra time on my hands, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to explore a new passion, Floristry. I’d always known I wanted a more flexible career, one that was grounded in nature and creativity. But after investigating which educational pathway to take, travelling for the hands-on components of the course just wasn’t feasible. The combination of Covid travel restrictions & when we reopened I would be back to full time plus more work in the salon I needed something self paced & online. So, I turned to horticulture.
I enrolled in an online horticulture course, which allowed me to study from home. Working well for me during that time of homebound but also when I returned to the salon. I would complete the written assessments, film myself doing tasks in the garden, and submit them for assessment— It felt like a perfect fit, and I dove in headfirst.
When my first baby arrived in 2021, everything changed. My lease was up, and with a newborn in my arms, I knew it was the perfect moment to reassess my life. The pace of life slowed down, and I realized I craved something more aligned with my values—a career that allowed me to be home more, focus on my family, and nurture my creative side in a new way.
As my knowledge grew, so did my love for growing flowers. It was my creative outlet, my way of slowing down and reconnecting with nature. But, like anything else, my little backyard garden quickly outgrew its space. So, I made the decision to expand. My in-laws live just on the outskirts of Mudgee, and they offered me the perfect space to grow even more flowers. The property became my “micro flower patch,” and I was finally able to spread my creative wings, cultivating an even greater variety of blooms.
Fast forward to today, and Posie Club is bringing fresh, locally grown flowers straight to the doors of my beautiful community. Who would have thought that what began as a small hobby during a lockdown would blossom into a full-fledged business? It’s been an unexpected journey, but one that has completely transformed my life.
Running a flower subscription service has allowed me to blend my creativity with my desire to make an impact. I get to share the joy that flowers bring to me, while also giving other women a moment of self-care, something we all need more of. Being a mum of now three little ones while running my business is still a juggling act, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Every day is a new challenge, but it’s also a reminder of why I started this journey in the first place.
It’s funny how life takes unexpected turns, isn’t it? One minute, I was snipping hair, and the next, I’m snipping stems. I never anticipated that growing flowers would become my new career, but here I am, deeply grateful for this beautiful, wild ride.
Running Posie Club has brought me closer to what matters most—family, creativity, and connection. It hasn’t always been easy, but every moment has been worth it.
If you’ve ever felt pulled to follow your heart and make a big change, I hope my story inspires you to take that leap. Life is full of surprises, and sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead us to exactly where we need to be.
Thanks for joining me on this journey. If you’re looking for a little beauty and joy to add to your life, I’d love for you to be part of the Posie Club family. Whether it’s our Doorstep Dahlias subscription or another bloom, I hope our flowers bring you the same happiness they bring me.
Wishing you a gorgeous day,
