What Grows in the Quiet Season

There’s something quietly powerful about winter.

The garden slows, the blooms retreat, and the days take on a softer rhythm.
It’s easy to assume not much is happening, there’s quiet work underway. Roots are strengthening. Soil is rebuilding. Energy is being stored. In both the garden, and myself.

It’s not flashy. It’s not fast. But it matters.

This year, all of our spring flowers are tucked in.
Colibri and Iceland Poppies, Stock, Italian Ranunculus, single and double Tulips. All resting patiently, waiting for the longer days & warmth of the sun.
The garden feels still, but every bed holds promise. The work is done for now, and this slower season gives something back...time.

Although it may seem like nothing is happening in winter, so much actually is.
We might not be harvesting armloads of flowers, but we gain something else. A chance to move through the garden slowly, without the rush of peak harvest. It’s quieter, but beautifully so.

The dahlias will need to be lifted, divided, and stored soon, but I know there’s no rush. Their time will come, just like it always does.
Once they’re up, the beds will be topped with compost, gently worked, and left to rest quietly until it’s their moment again.

With the planting behind us, our energy shifts. We’re spending more time indoors, at the computer, refining systems, dreaming up what’s next.
Garden plans, creative projects, seedling orders, spring strategies… there’s space for it now. Space to think clearly and plan slowly, without the noise of constant doing.

Winter here in Mudgee is something special. Crisp, frosty mornings that give way to golden afternoons.
Quiet time by the fire. Long, uninterrupted hours in the garden with no stopwatch ticking in the background.

And somewhere in that quiet, I find myself returning to the why.

Posie Club was never just about growing flowers, it was about building a lifestyle that made room for what mattered.
For me, that meant creating something that blended with family life, rather than competing with it.
Not always easy, but always worth it. Leaning into the chaos of family and business as a united front has been essential.

Yes, there are days where I’ve felt tempted to put things off because it’s “too hard” with little ones underfoot. And yes, they do slow things down.
But honestly? That’s kind of the point.
This slow season, with no time limits really reminds me & instills that concept.

Both the garden and the kids have taught me the same lesson. That growth doesn’t always look like hustle.
That slowness can be sacred. That tending to something whether it’s a tulip bulb or a small human, requires presence far more than perfection.

I’m learning (again and again) that productivity isn’t the only measure of progress. That success isn’t measured by how busy you are, or how close you are to burnout.
That slower seasons aren’t less valuable, they’re simply quieter. And often, they’re where the real work happens. The kind you didn’t know you needed.

So if you’re in a slow season, take heart. There’s still growth happening.
